Patent filing

From captured invention to filed application.

Filing takes four steps: write down what’s new, check what’s already public, draft the claims, and file. Our registered patent attorneys do the last three from your spec, and you approve before anything is filed.

How a filing works

Four steps. You approve each one.

From the record you built, through to the patent office.

  • Send what you have

A spec, a deck, or a pull request. If you’ve captured it in Lightbringer, the record goes with it.

  • Talk it through

An attorney comes back with questions and next steps.

  • Draft and review

A registered patent attorney drafts and checks what’s already public. You review and comment.

  • Approve and file

The person who signs off for your company approves. We file and handle the back-and-forth with the patent office.

When it’s time to file, nobody starts from a blank page.

Questions

How do I file a patent?

Write down what’s new and how it works, check what’s already public, then file an application with a patent office. The claims decide what you own, so most companies use a patent attorney. With Lightbringer, you capture the invention first, and our attorneys draft and file from that record.

UK or European patent?

A UK application covers the UK. A European application at the EPO can cover many European countries through one procedure. An attorney helps you choose the route, usually based on where you build and sell.

What does filing cost?

Drafting and filing are part of Managed IP, sold as plans that include the platform. Official fees depend on the office. Talk to an attorney about your invention.

Should we file before we publish or demo?

Often, yes. Publishing first can make protection harder to get, so capture the invention and talk to an attorney before it goes public.
